Youth Mental Health Task Force
In 2010, WIVP, in partnership with Siouxland Community Health, Kind World Foundation, the Sioux City Community Schools, Siouxland Human Investment Partnership, Siouxland Mental Health, Briar Cliff College, and others formed a task force to address the serious issue of adolescent mental health. Inspired by West High school’s pilot “Teen Screen” program, the group formed to focus on three action items.
1) Provide students and parents more information on the national “Teen Screen” program to increase the number screened for potential mental health concerns.
2) Move the “Teen Screen” Program into additional schools and provide staff and students more education and awareness.
3) Increase awareness among parents and the community about the prevalence of depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders among youth.
In two years, the Task Force increased the number of screenings almost 10 times among youth, referred youth and families to services, and moved the program into 2 additional high school buildings.
